Presented by Houston Dance Consortium
Empowering Voices. Unleashing Movement.

About

Caged Performance is a transformative dance and storytelling experience that explores themes of confinement, resilience, and liberation. Through powerful choreography, video, and community dialogue, this production amplifies voices often unheard and invites audiences to reflect, connect, and act. The piece explores themes of captivity, power dynamics, and the blurred lines between oppressor and oppressed. The central question posed to the audience is: Who is truly caged?

This project speaks to communities passionate about animal rights, social justice, and contemporary art. By visually and emotionally addressing the plight of caged animals while drawing parallels to human struggles with confinement—be it societal, mental, or physical—the work fosters a sense of shared empathy and connection. It empowers the community by igniting awareness and creating a platform for dialogue and advocacy.

This is a Contemporary dance performance that combines live movement with custom video projections.

  • To evoke emotion and provoke introspection.
  • The dancers will use physicality to portray the raw vulnerability of animals and the calculated dominance of humans.
  • The video projections will serve as a haunting backdrop, amplifying the metaphorical and literal cages that confine both animals and people
  • To educate and inform
  • We will take a look throughout history and tell the story of animal captivity worldwide.
  • We will also highlight human captivity whether it be physical, mental or financial
  • Pose the statement that we are really the ones who are ‘Caged’ and our actions towards animals are a reflection of our lack of control and own suffering or desires.
  • Launch Date: June 2026
  • Venue(s): MATCH theater
  • Audience: Adults, educators, artists, and community leaders
  • Reach: Houston Communities
